APGAR Score

APGAR Scoring for Newborns
________________________________________
A score is given for each sign at one minute and five minutes after the birth. If there are problems with the baby an additional score is given at 10 minutes. A score of 7-10 is considered normal, while 4-7 might require some resuscitative measures, and a baby with Apgar scores of 3 and below requires immediate resuscitation.

Here’s a link to a previous post on newborn examination.

  1. Thank you for this Gloria. I think it is very important to for people to know who made this scoring system, how babies are scored, when and by whom, and the actual chart of scoring.

It’s the somewhat scientific chart for mother’s instinct of holding and looking at her new baby.

    🙂

  2. Virginia Apgar originally developed this scoring to determine the side effects of anesthesia given to the mother on the baby. She wanted to show that general anesthesia and other drugs given to laboring women had a depressive effect on the baby. This was ground breaking work and is used as a general scoring for overall immediate health. There are some who think giving the APGAR score is like getting a 100% on the SAT, but it is, as mentioned, a guideline for resuscitation.
